PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more economical production process for a silicon carbide fiber having excellent physical properties, for example, high strength. SOLUTION: A composition that is composed of a silicon-containing polymer that bears silylene group (-SiH2-) as a recurring structural unit or a composition consisting of the above composition and a polycarbosilane that is prepared by thermally modifying permethyl-polysilane is spun into fibers. Then, the resultant fibers are infusibilized in the presence of oxygen and/or under irradiation with radioactive rays or electron beams at 0-300 deg.C, further the infusibilized fibers are heated at 800-2,000 deg.C in vacuum or in an inert gas to produce the objective silicon carbide fibers.
