AN ON-LOAD TAP CHANGER

The invention relates to commutation in on-load tap changers and in particular to the utilisation of arcing at the contacts of one of a pair of opposed switch elements . The invention provides a commutation circuit being connectable to a pair of opposed switch elements in the tap changer and a tap winding of the transformer, the commutation circuit being operable to establish a resonant current upon closure of a non-conducting switch element to commutate off an arcing switch element . The commutation circuit may be incorporated into a diverter for use with a conventional Selector or may form part of a complete tap changer.
