PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-propelled vacuum cleaner capable of reliably picking up dust on a surface to be cleaned without requiring a user to perform troublesome work such as replacing a suction port implement. SOLUTION: In the vacuum cleaner 1, a ranging sensor 18 provided near a rotation brush device measures a distance between the ranging sensor 18 and a floor surface. Then, in accordance with the distance, a brush having a most appropriate length of the brush with respect to the floor surface on which the rotation brush device abuts is selected from among brushes 9A to 9H, it is sent to a position where the brush abuts on the floor surface, and cleaning is performed. That is, a brush out of brushes 9A to 9H to use for cleaning operation facing the floor surface is determined on the basis of the distance to the floor surface measured by the ranging sensor 18.
