The present invention provides a method for encoding a video signal and the method is characterised by comprising the steps of: determining a predominant prediction direction of a current block using information on neighbouring blocks; determining the number of intra-prediction modes that are to be transmitted based on the predominant prediction direction; determining an optimum intra-prediction mode based on the number of intra-prediction modes; and generating a prediction signal according to the optimum intra-prediction mode.
