Exemplary embodiments are disclosed that allow a user to select whether he/she wants to listen to an entire cardiac cycle or a portion of the cardiac cycle of a patient. The portion of the cardiac cycle is gated by detecting a physiological trigger and gating the heart sound based on settings to provide just the desired portion of the cardiac cycle.
