PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a class of rhodamine dyes having a substantially narrower fluorescent spectrum than presently available rhodamine dyes and to provide a class of rhodamine dyes having a red-shifted absorption spectrum compared with existing rhodamine dyes. SOLUTION: One set of 4,7-dichlororhodamine compounds useful as a fluorescent dye are disclosed. In another aspect, the invention includes reagents labeled with the 4,7-dichlororhodamine dye compounds, including deoxynucleotides, dideoxynucleotides and polynucleotides. In an additional aspect, the invention includes methods utilizing such dye compounds and reagents, including dideoxypolynucleotide sequencing and fragment analysis methods.
