PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an allocation method of physical storage areas to virtual volumes in a hierarchical virtual storage device using a hard disk device and a tape library device. SOLUTION: In the hierarchical virtual storage, physical data copying on a tape is not carried out but only management information of the virtual volume is copied to create another virtual volume. When a reading request is made, the virtual volume is made to be acquired as necessary data. When update/new writing is carried out, a new physical storage area is allocated to each virtual volume.
