PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a half wave length plate used under a high temperature atmosphere easily causes the deterioration of optical characteristics of an organic film by the heat and the half wave length plate is conventionally arranged to have a certain interval from a polarizer to prevent a bad influence from the heat generated in the polarizer, but the arrangement interval prevents the miniaturization of an optical engine or a display device. SOLUTION: The optical device 10 is formed by laminating a polarization plate 15 on an exposed main surface of one of both outermost birefringent plates of the half wave length plate part formed by laminating the plurality of birefringent plates made of quart as a base material. The display has the optical device 10 placed on the front stage of light incident surface and/or the subsequent stage of light out-going surface of a polarized beam splitter 16.
