PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-magnification zoom lens which is compact and has high image quality, and an imaging apparatus using the zoom lens. SOLUTION: The zoom lens 1A is constituted by arranging in order from an object side, a first lens group GR1 having positive refractive power and always fixed positionally, a second lens group GR2 having negative refractive power and set to move positionally mainly for variable power, a third lens group GR3 having positive refractive power and always fixed positionally, a fourth lens group GR4 having positive refractive power and set to move positionally for the correction of a focal position due to the variable power and focusing, and a fifth lens group GR5 that is a single lens always fixed positionally. At least one surface of each of the third lens group, the fourth lens group and the fifth lens group is made aspherical. The zoom lens 1A satisfies following conditional expressions (1) and (2). (1) ¾f4/f5¾<0.12, (2) 0.9<β5<1.2, wherein f4 is a focal length of the fourth lens group, f5 is a focal length of the fifth lens group andβ5 is a lateral magnification of the fifth lens group.
