<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an audio processing system having a filter unit that employs an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter to filter audio signals and minimizing a transient response following a coefficient change. <P>SOLUTION: The filter unit initializes elements in the tap delay lines of the IIR filters to non-zero values. In one embodiment, the tap delay elements are changed to a set of predetermined non-zero values. In another embodiment, the tap delay line elements are initialized to the final values produced by the filter for the previous sound source location. In a third embodiment, the tap delay line elements are initialized to values that are functions of the new coefficients and the first sample of data at the new location.
