<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve power generation characteristics in a solid polymer fuel cell using a hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolyte. <P>SOLUTION: A membrane-electrode assembly 20 for the solid polymer fuel cell is equipped with an anode catalyst layer 14a and a cathode catalyst layer 14b arranged so as to face each other, and a polymer electrolyte membrane 12 installed between the anode catalyst layer 14a and the cathode catalyst layer 14b, and the anode catalyst layer 14a and the cathode catalyst layer 14b contain a catalyst and a hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolyte having an ion exchange group. When ion exchange group density of the anode catalyst layer is α [μeq/cm<SP>2</SP>], and ion exchange density of the cathode catalyst layer is β [μeq/cm<SP>2</SP>], α and β satisfy relational expressions (1), (2) and (3).
