PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of detecting a contact position of a tool with a workpiece without damaging any one of the tool and the workpiece during the grinding or cutting even when a worker mistakenly performs the work, or without depending on any material of the tool and the workpiece. SOLUTION: A tool spindle 3 is placed on a hydrostatic bearing 10, and the tool spindle 3 is moved in the direction parallel to the moving direction of a workpiece 2. A cylinder 8 provides the pressure to generate the holding rigidity to the tool spindle 3 via the hydrostatic bearing 10. A stopper 13 regulates the positional change caused by the pressure between the hydrostatic bearing 10 and the tool spindle 3. When the workpiece 2 is moved and brought close to a tool 1 by a Z-axis direction moving means, the workpiece moving coordinates detected by a glass scale 9 at the instant when detecting the movement of the tool spindle 3 on the hydrostatic bearing 10 is defined as the contact position between the tool 1 and the workpiece 2.
