PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the power source of the light source to be turned off upon the removal of a light source unit from the body of a portable endoscope. SOLUTION: The light source unit 12 is detachably mounted on the body 11 of the endoscope. The light source unit 12 is provided with a detection switch 24 with a pin 25 and when the light source unit 12 is mounted on the body 11 of the endoscope, the light source 28 makes a continuity through the pin 25, thereby turning itself on. When the light source unit 12 is removed from the body 11 of the endoscope, the pin 25 is insulated to shut down the supply of the power from a battery 19, thereby turning the light source 28 off.
