The invention relates to a burner device (10) comprising a combustion chamber (26), a fuel supply pipe (16), a combustion air supply pipe (18), and an exhaust gas discharge pipe (38) mounted downstream of the combustion chamber (26). A combustion mixture is produced from delivered fuel and delivered combustion air. A mixing zone (20) to which combustion gas can be fed via a combustion gas supply pipe (22, 24) and in which the combustion gas can be mixed with the combustion air and/or the combustion mixture is mounted upstream of the combustion chamber (26). Said burner device (10) is used as an afterburner in a fuel cell system. Anode exhaust gas of a fuel cell or fuel cell stack (42) can be fed to the mixing zone (20) via the combustion gas supply pipe (22, 24). According to the invention, the burner device (10) operates as a starting burner during a starting phase of the fuel cell system, the combustion mixture that is fed to the burner device being burnt also when no anode exhaust gas is delivered. |
