A circuit breaker 1 is provided with: a first inductor 11 having a first external connection terminal T1; a mechanical breaker 12 for opening in response to a command and interrupting an electric current path, the mechanical breaker 12 being connected in series to the first inductor 11 and having a second external connection terminal T2 on the reverse side thereof from the side on which the first inductor 11 is connected; one or a plurality of semiconductor electric power converters 13 cascade-connected to each other and provided on wiring which branches from wiring for connecting the first inductor 11 and the mechanical breaker 12, the semiconductor electric power converters 13 outputting a predetermined direct-current electric current by the switching of semiconductor switches provided inside thereof in response to a command; and a second inductor 14 connected in series to the mechanical breaker 12 or the semiconductor electric power converters 13.
