The invention provides a manually operable control input device for controlling the operation of a marine vessel is provided, the control input device comprising: a stationary support having a stationary magnetic element; an actuator movable relative to the stationary support and having a movable magnetic element moving in response to actuator movement; and a transferable component having a transferable magnetic element magnetically attractable to the stationary and movable magnetic elements, transferable from being held by one of the stationary/movable magnetic element to the other thereof. As the movable magnetic element traveling along or positioned on a first or second portion of the path, the transferable component is held by the actuator or the stationary support. At a detent point, the transferable component is held by the actuator and the stationary support, and the interaction of the stationary and transferable and movable magnetic elements provides user feedback.
