PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decoloring method of an image capable of efficiently erasing the colors of the image and the image itself from a recording medium having the image including one or more of pigments in the surface thereof, and a decoloring device therefor. SOLUTION: In the method for erasing the colors of the image of a printed matter having the image on the front surface of the recording medium, the image includes the pigments selectively reacting with ozone in ground state in one-electron activated state. The method comprises the steps of: irradiating the image with visible light, making the pigment molecules of the pigments activated state by irradiating light, and exposing the same to the ozone.
