PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing apparatus which achieves high-speed printing and low-cost high-definition printing by a sublimation printer equipped with a thermal head that carries out printing by thermal transfer, and to provide a printing method. SOLUTION: Image data of a resolution of 300 dpi is transferred from a host computer 1 to a printer 2. Data of one line is copied from a memory buffer for image data 3 to a memory buffer for calculation 4. In the memory buffer for calculation 4, the image data of one line of the resolution of 300 dpi is expanded to image data of 600 dpi, and edge emphasis processing is carried out after the expanding.
