PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a traffic amount detection device and a traffic amount detection method capable of precisely detecting a model even if two vehicles are performing abnormal approach traveling. SOLUTION: This traffic amount detection device is configured to detect the model of a vehicle based on the output waveforms outputted by an upstream side first sensor and a downstream second sensor isolated from the first sensor by predetermined length which detect a vehicle traveling on a road, wherein first and second reference points as reference featured points are set in the respective output waveforms of the first and second sensors (S21), and the first and second featured points following the respectively set first and second featured points are extracted (S23), and first and second time as respective differences of the points of time between the extracted first and second featured points and between the first and second reference points are calculated, and the first and second featured points are associated with each other (S25, S27) based on a time difference between the first and second featured points and a difference between the first and second time (S25, S27) (S29), and a model is detected based on whether or not a time zone when the respective output waveforms of the associated first and second featured points become a predetermined threshold or larger is overlapped (S31).
