PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To take a countermeasure against cracks generated in a gas barrier layer without forming the gas barrier layer of multilayered structure, with respect to a liquid crystal display element using a flexible substrate like a plastic film. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element which has liquid crystal charged in a space formed by two flexible substrates and a seal and controls optical characteristics of the liquid crystal by electrodes formed on liquid crystal layer-side surfaces of the substrates to display an image, an overall area 14 made of the same materials as the electrode 15 is provided in an area where the electrode 15 does not exist on the liquid crystal layer-side surface of a plastic substrate 19 having gas barrier layers 11 and 13 formed on both surfaces thereof.
