PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a formatting method of an MD disk which can prevent the user from recording music data in an improper recording mode. SOLUTION: This recording and reproducing device has a write means to write a 1st control information to control the data to record in the Hi-MD mode, or a 2nd control information to control the data usually to record in the normal MD mode on a disk, a selector to choose the Hi-MD mode or the normal MD mode, a memory to store the 1st control information or the 2nd control information, and a storing means which stores the 1st control information in the memory when the Hi-MD mode is chosen by the selector but stores the 2nd control information in the memory when the normal MD mode is selected. The write means writes the 1st or 2nd piece of control information chosen by the selector and stored in the memory on a disk in the state that the music data are not recorded.
