PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine capable of properly restraining overheating of a catalyst, in the internal combustion engine likely to put a valve overlap quantity in a negative state. SOLUTION: This control device 80 executes driving control of an exhaust side variable valve train 60b of changing the valve timing of an exhaust valve 18, knocking control for correcting the ignition time for delaying when detecting knocking and overheating restraining control for restraining the overheating of the catalyst 70. When executing the overheating restraining control, the estimate temperature of the catalyst 70 is calculated based on an engine operation state, and when determining that the catalyst 70 is an overheating state based on its estimate temperature, a quantity increase correction of a fuel injection quantity is made as restraining processing for restraining the overheating of the catalyst 70. When calculating its estimate temperature, when the valve overlap quantity becomes negative and when the valve overlap quantity does not become negative, its estimate temperature is calculated so that the estimate temperature becomes different.
