PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bidirectional optical module cutting off stray light to reduce the incidence outside an effective light reception area. SOLUTION: The bidirectional optical module 100 is a module which emits light to an optical fiber 73 and on which returned light from the optical fiber 73 is incident. The bidirectional optical module 100 includes light emitting elements 110, 130 emitting light to be incident on the optical fiber 73, a light receiving element 190 receiving the light emitted from the optical fiber 73, and a combining/splitting element 160 guiding the light emitted from the optical fiber 73 to the light receiving element 190. The light receiving element 190 is characterized in that a substrate 191 that is a high refractive index medium is interposed between a boundary surface 191a on which the light is incident and a light reception part 197 receiving the light. Accordingly, a distance d' between a position where the returned light that has traveled through the substrate 191 is coupled and a position where the stray light is coupled becomes larger than a distance d in the case of traveling in a vacuum, thereby reducing the stray light coupled to the light receiving part 197.
