A systems and methods for monitoring a patient in or around a bed is provided. Systems and methods are provided for a medical monitoring system that is capable of identifying a positional state, or a sequence of positional states, of a patient in or around a bed, and determining if the positional state, or sequence of positional states, is dangerous to the patient. Upon determining the patient is in danger, an alert is communicated to one or more caregivers.

a housing configured to be mounted proximate to a bed; a camera rotatably mounted within the housing and arranged to acquire images of a patient in or around the bed; and a processor configured to process the images acquired by the camera and determine a positional state of the patient.
