PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method and a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of surely preventing a combustion state from being out of a combustion limit when controlling the internal combustion engine based on requirement given to the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: It is determined whether the combustion state prescribed by a requirement value about a first control parameter and a second control parameter prescribing the combustion state is within the combustion limit or not. When the combustion state is not within the combustion limit, the requirement value about the low priority parameter having the lower priority between the first control parameter and the second control parameter is varied so that the combustion state is within the combustion limit, and the target value is obtained. When the low priority parameter is the low response parameter having lower responsiveness between the first control parameter and the second control parameter, the response delay generated in an actual value of the low response parameter is considered, and the requirement value about the high priority parameter having the higher priority is corrected to be the value so that the combustion state is within the combustion limit, and the target value is obtained.
