The invention concerns a method for characterising a transparent encapsulation scheme (4) for a component able to be damaged by water, the method comprising a step of preparing a sample (1) formed from a layer of calcium (2) on a surface of a transparent substrate (3) inside the encapsulation scheme (4), the layer of calcium (2) having an initial quantity of calcium; a plurality of measurements steps carried out at successive times, each measurement step comprising the acquisition of an image of a light beam transmitted through the sample (1) and the processing of said image so as to estimate the residual quantity of calcium in the sample (1) at each of said times; a step of selecting the images corresponding to an estimated residual quantity of calcium strictly between 40% and 100% of the initial quantity in order to establish a sequence of ordered images; a step of determining a water permeation characteristic of the encapsulation scheme (4) from the sequence of ordered images.
