PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the generation of a streaklike abnormal image while suppressing variation in quality of image. SOLUTION: A decision is made whether there is a risk of occurring a streaklike abnormal image in the image of a document 90 or not due to a contaminant adhering onto a contact glass 30 by reading out the image of a reference plate 26. If there is the risk, the generation of such an abnormal image is suppressed by altering the document reading position 36 among positions A0-A3. The document 90 passes on the contact glass 30 under a state bent in the conveyance direction by a registration roller 5. Consequently, when the document reading position 36 is altered, reading sensitivity changes sensitively and the quality of the document image is affected sensitively. In order to break off such an inconvenience, quantity of light of an exposure lamp 28 is corrected depending on the document reading position 36. Reading sensitivity is measured by reading out a reference document all in white in place of a normal document 90, and correction data is created from measurements and stored in a memory.
