PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To design magnetic field bias of a magnetoresistance effect film with good controllability relating to a magnetic read head, compound thin film magnetic head, and a hard disk magnetic recording unit. SOLUTION: The magnetic read head comprises a free layer 2 for easily changing magnetization direction by an external magnetic field, non magnetic intermediate layer 3, magnetic shield layers 5 and 6 on upper and lower sides in the film thickness direction of the magnetoresistance film 1 comprising a pinned layer 4 whose magnetization direction is hard to change against the external magnetic field, a magnetoresistance effect element for flowing a sensing current 8 in the film thickness direction of the magnetoresistance effect film 1, and a magnetic field imposing mechanism 7 for flowing electric current independently from the magnetoresistance effect element in the vicinity of the magnetoresistance effect film 1.
