PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder with a structure capable of predicting the rotation lifetime of a rotating shaft. SOLUTION: The structure comprises: an integrated rotation number calculating means (integrated rotation number calculating section 11 and integrated rotation number storage memory 12) for counting a rotation number of the rotating shaft 32 regardless of rotation directions of the rotating shaft 32 from a rotation direction and a rotation angle of the rotating shaft 32 which are detected by a rotary encoder 30, and for obtaining an integrated rotation number of the rotating shaft 32; a reference rotation number memory section 13 for storing a reference rotation number defined based on the rated life of a bearing 33; and an alarm means (alarm operating section 14 and alarm device 15) which compares the reference rotation number stored in the reference rotation number memory section 13 with the integrated rotation number of the rotating shaft 32 obtained by the integrated rotation number calculating means and carries out an alarm operation, when the integrated rotation number of the rotating shaft 32 obtained by the integrated rotation number calculating means reaches the reference rotation number stored in the reference rotation number memory section 13.
