PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient coding and modulation system for the transmission of digital data via plastic optical fibers with low latency.SOLUTION: In particular, a digital signal is coded by means of a two-level coset coding. A first level applies a binary shortened BCH coding to the digital data and performs coset partitioning by means of constellation mapping and lattice transformations. A second level is uncoded but undergoes mapping and lattice transformations. After an addition of the two levels, a second-stage lattice transformation is performed so as to obtain a zero-mean constellation. Symbols output from such three-level coset coder are then further modulated.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
