PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To project and display an image always appropriate in a vertical relation by taking an aspect ratio etc., of the image to be projected into consideration when an apparatus casing is vertically or horizontally placed by being rotated around the optical axis of projection. SOLUTION: The projector is equipped with: a length and breadth sensor 43 which detects the attitude of the apparatus casing; a controller 40 which converts the size of the image after subjecting the image developed and stored in a video RAM 34 to rotation processing based on the result of the detection obtained by the sensor 43; a display encoder 33 which projects and displays the image converted in the size; and a projection system including a display driving section 35, a spatial optical modulator (SOM) 36, a light source lamp 37, and a projection lens 12.
