It is possible to provide a negative electrode which contains Li-occluding element as a negative electrode active material, can prevent deformation or peeling off of the negative electrode active material layer from a negative electrode collector and precipitation of lithium to the negative electrode collector, and has an excellent large current discharge characteristic and an excellent discharge characteristic at a low temperature. A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery including the negative electrode is also provided. The negative electrode includes: a collector having a concave portion and a convex portion on the surface in the thickness direction; and a negative electrode active material layer having a plurality of columnar bodies containing a negative electrode active material which occludes and emits lithium ions. Furthermore, in the negative electrode, the columnar bodies grow with an inclination angle against the vertical direction wit respect to the collector surface and the inclination angle of the columnar bodies reversibly changes in accordance with occlusion and emission of the lithium ions by the negative electrode active material.
