The method involves providing a virtual image of an automobile body as an automobile covering in an environment (1) e.g. desert area, to represent an automobile. A replacement character (9) is aligned in the environment for adjustment to a predetermined situation, with which constellation of the automobile is produced and the virtual image of the automobile covering is aligned at the replacement character. A pitch for the automobile is selected and the replacement character is placed according to the desired pitch of the automobile. An independent claim is also included for a device for imaging an automobile in an environment.
