The system has a refrigerant compressor (1) driven by a motor (M) of a vehicle. An evaporator (4) has an exit side whose air temperature is adjustable to a predetermined temperature range by the compressor, where the air temperature corresponds to evaporator temperature. A control element (9) e.g. temperature rotary knob, is coupled with the compressor by a control device (12) such that power adjustment of the compressor and adjustment of the evaporator temperature take place during selection of blow-up temperature in the predetermined temperature region at the element. An independent claim is also included for a method for air conditioning a passenger compartment of a motor vehicle by an air conditioning system.
