Use of 4-alkenylphenol derivatives (I) to prepare a composition for increasing the level of testosterone in the blood and for treating sexual dysfunction/improving sexual function in humans, treating sexual problems in men and women, increasing libido (particularly in post-menopausal women and men), increasing muscle mass, treating impotence, and as erectogenic and aphrodisiac agents. Use of 4-alkenylphenol derivatives of formula (I) to prepare a composition for increasing the level of testosterone in the blood and for treating sexual dysfunction/improving sexual function in humans, treating sexual problems in men and women, increasing libido (particularly in post-menopausal women and men), increasing muscle mass, treating impotence, and as erectogenic and aphrodisiac agents. CD1 male mice were treated daily through a gastric tube, with 3 mg/kg of chavicol acetoxyacetate (Ia), for 4 weeks, then placed in an enclosure with 5 female mice. The mean number of sexual couplings (actual and attempted) during the next hour was 47.8 and the mean serum level of testosterone was 0.998 ng/ml. The corresponding figures for untreated animals were 22.4 and 0.214 ng/ml, corresponding to p = 0.001 (number of couplings) and p = 0.130 (testosterone level).
