Perylene dyes (I) are new. Perylene dyes of formula (I) are new. R 1>-R 4>H, halo or 1-37C n-alkyl, optionally with 1-10 CH 2groups replaced by CO, O, N, S, Se, Te, CH=CH, CH=N, N=CH, ethynylene, phenylene, pyridinediyl, thiophenediyl, naphthylene, mono- or diazanaphthylene, anthrylene or mono- or diazaanthrylene, optionally substituted with 1-12 of halo, CN or R; and R, R' (sic) : 1-18C n-alkyl, optionally with 1-6 CH 2groups replaced by CO, O, N, S, Se, Te, CH=CH, CH=N, N=CH, ethynylene, phenylene, pyridinediyl, thiophenediyl, naphthylene, mono- or diazanaphthylene, anthrylene or mono- or diazaanthrylene, optionally substituted with 1-12 of halo, CN or R'. Instead of being substituted, the free valences of methine groups or quaternary C atoms can be linked in pairs to form rings. [Image].
