The invention relates to a handheld surgical instrument (1) comprising a shaft (2), the distal end region of which is equipped with an effector (3) and the proximal end region of which is equipped with a handle (6) having two handle pieces (10, 12) with a mutual distance that can be adjusted by manual actuation in order to control the effector (3). The handle pieces are paired with a blocking device (15) which blocks the reciprocal movement of the handle pieces (10, 12) in a movement direction in one engaged position and allows the reciprocal movement in another position and which can be brought into a non-engaged position, said blocking device being locked by a locking element (24) arranged between the handle pieces (10, 12) in the non-engaged position.
