PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for more reliably recognizing a board, a board recognizing device, a surface mounting machine, a board inspecting device, and a printing machine.

SOLUTION: A board recognizer 5 recognizes the presence or absence of a printed circuit board or the type thereof on the basis of a frequency characteristic of an image signal obtained by imaging the board by an imaging device 51. The frequency characteristic of the image signal of the printed circuit board is different between the presence and absence of the board or between the types thereof. The board recognizer 5 recognizes the presence or absence of the board or the type thereof by using such a characteristic.
