PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce disturbance of a display image by suppressing the variance of an image size at the time of a transition when a first conversion mode for increasing the number of pixels is shifted to a second conversion mode for reducing the number of pixels. SOLUTION: In the first conversion mode, an image signal (band-unlimited) from a vertical LPF 114 is supplied to a vertical interpolation filter 115 via a field memory 116, subjected to interpolation processing for increasing the number of pixels, and then supplied to a vertical enhancer 117. In the second conversion mode, an image signal (band-limited) from the vertical LPF 114 is supplied to the vertical interpolation filter 115, subjected to interpolation processing for reducing the number of pixels, and then supplied to the vertical enhancer 117 through the field memory 116. At the time of a transition for shifting from the first conversion mode to the second conversion mode, the image signal (band-limited) from the vertical LPF 114 is supplied to a simple reduction circuit 119 via the field memory 116, the number of pixels are reduced, and then supplied to the vertical enhancer 117.
