A method and apparatus for cleaning vehicles. The method of cleaning a vehic le can include irradiating an exterior surface of the vehicle with artificial electromagnetic radiation. The exterior surface of the vehicle can have soil deposited thereon, which can include a plurality of PAHs. At least some of t he plurality of PAHs can be bonded together via a chemical bond having a bond energy. The method can further include breaking the chemical bond with the artificial electromagnetic radiation. The artificial electromagnetic radiati on can have a predetermined wavelength that corresponds to the energy required to break the chemical bond. The method can further include cleaning the vehicle .
