PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new inter-cylinder phase difference variable device, varying the stroke phase difference between the cylinders even if an output shaft is not divided and to provide a variable cylinder device, which can maintain an output balance in each number of operating cylinders in continuously changing the number of operating cylinders. SOLUTION: Only the motion for rotating the output shaft in one direction is transmitted from a piston to the output shaft by a one-way clutch, and in no cases other than this, the piston is not bound to the rotational phase of the output shaft. Therefore, in all cylinders, the stroke phases are not mutually bound, so that a stroke phase difference between the cylinders can be a little changed by controlling the ignition timing and the fuel injection quantity in the step S110, and this is repeated to make a change to an arbitrary phase difference between the cylinders. Thus, the stroke phase difference between the cylinders can be varied without dividing the output shaft as in the prior art, and even if the number of operating cylinders is continuously changed, the output can be balanced in each number of operating cylinders.
