The present invention relates to a method of controlling a power steering system comprising at least one course control function (F1), whereby a position setpoint (θréf) is determined automatically according to a reference course that a vehicle is to be made to follow, then a motor setpoint (Cmot) applied to an assistance motor (2) is adjusted accordingly, said method comprising a safety function (F2) which is distinct from the course control function (F1) and meets a higher ASIL safety level according to the ISO‑26262 standard, said safety function (F2) comprising a diagnostics subfunction (F2‑1) according to which a control parameter (θvolant, Ccond, θ volant) such as the angular position of the steering wheel (θvolant), the driver torque applied to the steering wheel (Ccond), or the rate at which the steering wheel is turned (θ volant) is monitored in order to detect the onset of an alert situation considered to be hazardous, then an intervention subfunction (F2‑2) according to which, if an alert situation is detected, the course control function (F1) is neutralized. |
