Hand-held device is formed by housing with plug connection (8) for patch-cable, especially ISDN socket, and circuit board with transformer (9), transmitter (10), receiver (11), (de)coder (12,13), first display (14), two rectifiers (15,16), second display (18) and evaluation logic (17). Transformer is coupled to transmit and reception contacts of plug socket and communicates with transmitter and receiver. Transmitter communicates with coder (12) and receiver with decoder (13). Interconnection of other components is specified.
