<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character generation processing method which is high in speed of modification character generation processing, is small in memory use size and font size required for a character pattern development region and enables character expression having designability assuring character quality. <P>SOLUTION: The outline font data corresponding to character codes is read for every one character (S1), and the low-order bits of the gradation value relating to the outline font data are operated to compute the end information of a contour (S2). Next, the gradation value of a pixel providing the end information of the contour is referred for every one line and a flag for modification is set (S3). A main body portion of the character and a contour portion bordered by the flag for modification are simultaneously generated for every one line (S4).
