An optical system capable of routing primary and secondary high power lasers through a blocking switch is described.

1. An optical system comprising:
(a) a blocking switch having first and second input ports and M output ports, said block switch comprising;
a first 1×M switch having an input adapted to be coupled to a first output port of the first 1×M switch; anda second 1×M switch having an input adapted to be coupled to the second output port of the first 1×M switch such that the combination of the first 1×M switch and second 1×M switch provide a 2×M switch; (b) a primary laser coupled to the first input port of said blocking switch, said primary laser capable of being routed to any of the M ports of the first 1×M switch; and (c) a backup laser connected to the second input port of said blocking switch, said backup laser capable of being routed to any of the same M ports of the first 1×M switch.
