DEGASSER AND METHOD OF STRIPPING GAS FROM A LIQUID

A degasser includes a vessel having a series of chambers. Liquid containing a gas is directed through the vessel and the chambers therein. A stripping gas is injected into the vessel and moves through the vessel in a counter-current direction relative to the flow of liquid. More particularly, the stripping gas moves from one chamber to another chamber in an upstream direction (relative to the flow of the liquid) and is mixed with the liquid in each chamber, causing gas in the liquid to be displaced. Displaced gas is vented from the vessel at a location near where the liquid enters the vessel.

1. A method of removing gas from a liquid comprising:
directing the liquid into a liquid inlet of a vessel and flowing the liquid through a series of chambers formed in the vessel; injecting a stripping gas into the vessel downstream of the liquid inlet and past one or more chambers; inducing the stripping gas to flow upstream relative to the direction of flow of the liquid through the vessel; mixing the stripping gas with the liquid in one chamber and displacing gas from the liquid in the one chamber; directing the stripping gas from the one chamber to at least one upstream chamber and mixing the stripping gas with the liquid in the upstream chamber to displace additional gas from the liquid; discharging the displaced gas from the vessel at a location upstream of the one chamber; and discharging the liquid from the vessel.
