PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine having an improved combustion condition by surely igniting a mixture in a combustion chamber while well securing air supply/exhaust performance. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine 1 comprises a cylinder head CH, the combustion chamber 2 having an inlet port to be opened/closed by an inlet valve Vi and an exhaust port to be opened/closed by an exhaust valve Ve, and a plurality of ignition plugs 10, 10A mounted on the cylinder head CH to be located between the inlet valve Vi and the exhaust valve Ve. One of the plurality of ignition plugs is a housing-less ignition plug 10 which includes a plug body 11 having a center electrode 12 and an insulator 17 where an end 17a of the insulator 17 on the combustion chamber side is not covered with a housing 18, and a ground electrode 20 formed of a material different from that of the cylinder head CH and mounted on the cylinder head CH to encircle the outer periphery of the front end of the center electrode 12.
