An object recognizing device for stably recognizing the shape of an object near a mobile body with less computational complexity even if data on an object which is not to be detected is mixed, determining the relationship between the positions of them, and well indicating the position relationship. The object recognizing device for recognizing an object present near a mobile body comprises object detecting means (1) for detecting object surface shape information, shape recognizing means (2) for recognizing the outline shape of the object by computing the degree of agreement of a group of samples with a shape model determined on the basis of a sample arbitrarily extracted from the sample group constituting the surface shape information, relative position computing means (3) for computing the relative position relationship between the mobile body and the object according to the results of the detection by the object detecting means (1) and the recognition by the shape recognizing means (2), and annunciating means (5) for performing annunciation about the position relationship by displaying it on a display or by sounding.
