PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a gain of a preamplifier amplifying by switching gain depending on a kind of an output signal when an output of a head is amplified to an appropriate value in a preamplifier provided in a magnetic disk apparatus. SOLUTION: A gain setting apparatus 100 that externally performs setting of a magnetic disk apparatus 10 before shipment causes a servo gain setting unit 111 to set a servo data gain for a preamplifier 40 by a gain setting unit 111 for servo data. The gain setting apparatus 100 then causes a core deviation correction processor 112 to set the servo data gain as a provisional user data gain, so as to perform core deviation correction for correcting positional misalignment between a read core and a write core.
