A radio communication system comprises a base station and a plurality of radio terminals transmitting radio signals on an uplink channel to the base station and receiving radio signals from the base station on a downlink channel. The radio terminals are informed of which uplink slots should be used for reporting downlink interference information to the base station, and how they should be used for this purpose. The radio terminals further monitor radio signals on the downlink channel and detect interference in the downlink channel. Next, the radio terminals determine whether the interference in the downlink channel reaches a predetermined interference threshold, and report the interference on designated slots of the uplink channel when the interference reaches the predetermined interference threshold. Preferably, the detected interference is compared to two thresholds and a first set of the designated uplink slots (A, C, E) are used for reporting interference when the detected interference lies between the two thresholds, and the second set of slots (B, D) is used when the interference exceeds the second threshold. The step of reporting interference level may include providing terminal location information in the uplink slots. |
